The Municipality of Varna and the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria have launched a competition open to architects worldwide to design the new Varna Regional Library. Varna, the third-largest city in Bulgaria, has lacked a proper library building for years, and the library’s collection of over 860,000 items is spread across six different buildings in the city. The new competition aims to create a single space where the collection can be brought together, while creating an attractive public space in the city’s centre.
The new library will also be the first library to be built in Bulgaria in the past 30 years. Along with providing an attractive working space, housing over 860,000 items, and having space available for 400,000 more, the panel is looking for a modern institution with a contemporary attitude that says: “Come spend your free time with us.” The site is currently a park with a parking lot, housed between Osmi Primorski Pok Blvd, Bratya Miladinovi St, Professor Marin Drinov St, and the Municipality Hall of Varna, an existing landmark of the city.
Entry is free, and any architect registered for practice in their home country is eligible. First place will receive 10,000 EUR, and second and third place will receive 5,000 EUR each. The winner will also be put in contact with the Varna Municipality for development and construction of their design, with a maximum projected fee of 300,000 EUR. Entries must be submitted by November 9; find more information here.
